How to take good care of your fur and cashmere clothing

How to take good care of your fur and cashmere clothing

You just invested a decent amount of money in fur or cashmere? See below our tips from Patricia K Pritchard – all the finer things which hopefully will help you to ensure your fashion investment stays a long time with you!

First of all thank you for caring for your clothing: as both genuine fur and cashmeres are natural fibres they will last you a long time IF you give them the care they deserve.

Tips how to look after genuine fur items:

  • Please do hang your fur coat always on a broad, sturdy padded hanger to keep the shoulders from losing their shape.
  • Avoid hanging your fur in a garment bag, especially a plastic bag, that doesn’t breathe. If you want to keep dust and naughty nibbles off it use a 100% cotton garment bag or an old pure cotton bedsheet. It will act as a barrier against light, dust and moths – although if you have moths they might eventually nibble their way through to the fur. So moth prevention is important.
  • Always keep your furs in a cold, dark and dry place to avoid drying the pelt and natural hair fibres out. If you still have a furrier in your area who offers cold storage of fur in the summer consider taking him/her up on it.
  • Before storing do unpin all jewelry pinned onto your coat as it will possibly mat the fur.
  • If your fur took the smell of food or some places on you went – do NOT spray Parfum on it. Instead a trick you could use is to hang it into your bathroom after you had a shower and the steam will help to self clean the hair on your fur. Make sure it is completely dry before storing it.
  • A genuine fur coat should be cleaned every year by a professional fur cleaner, (this is different to your normal dry cleaner). Even if you don’t wear it often, animal fur gathers dust, oils, and odors. Even though you might not want to spend too much money on a professional clean – it is like sending your hair to a hairdresser: it will add luster and shine to the fur and keep it from becoming matted. So a little continuous investment will make sure your fur will last.
  • If you have any other questions do contact us – if we cannot answer your question we will endeavour to find someone within our furrier circle or at the British Fur Trade Association – of which we are proud members – to find the correct answer for you.

Tips how to look after genuine cashmere items:

  • As much as we aren’t experts for dry cleaning we personally wash our cashmere items by hand with special cashmere detergent. Whilst doing that use cold or luke warm water (NEVER hot water as this will shrink the fibres)
  • Press out the excess water, but do not wring the sweater. Instead, lay it flat on a towel and reshape it as it dries.
  • But before you wash your cashmere item do ask yourself if it is really necessary to wash it – as less washing is better – sometimes a good airing does the trick.
  • DO NOT hang your cashmere sweaters on hangers that will pull them out of shape – instead if you can do fold them.
  • As Cashmere is like fur a natural fibre it will deteriorate and lose colour if exposed to prolonged sunshine. Therefore keep the Cashmere in a cool, dark and dry place.
  • If you are afraid of moths who might want to eat your lovely clothes, do place moth deterrent around your clothes – always around and never on top or underneath your clothes as the active ingredient of the anti moth items might come in contact with your natural fibres and introduce a colour change. If you are using Cedar blocks – make sure any potential rough edges are not catching your garments and giving you ladders or holes.
  • After every season just before you store your winter clothes away do make sure every item you are going to store is clean, shaken out and then fold. Possibly use a garment tissue paper in between items – so no item will transfer colour from one to another.
  • If you put your cashmere items away for a while do invest in a good nylon or plastic bag which can be zipped up and sealed. So they keep on smelling fresh I love putting some cedar wood blocks in there too – just make sure the wood isn’t pulling any threads off the cashmere.
  • If you aren’t sure you haven’t stored any critters within – you could put your nicely packed cashmeres in the freezer for 48hrs and that should kill all moth larvae if present.
  • Cashmere will start bobbling after a while – it’s a natural occurrence due to the woven fibres – but it does vary from piece to piece depending on the length of the fibres used. Give it a shave from time to time with the cashmere shaver you could pick up in a well stocked department store or online. Our favourite one is the Alessi one.

Fur: The Sustainable Option

Fur: The Sustainable Option

‘Fur phobia’ has swept through the Fashion Industry. High end fashion brands, such as Chanel, Fendi and Prada, use fur, leather and animal skin. However, with luxury comes the perception that these products are simply a way for you to show off your wealth and are harmful to animals and the environment. The ever-growing hatred for authentic fur fashion has caused ‘lower end’ UK retailers to react, choosing plastic and faux fur alternatives.

For example, Boohoo and ASOS, two of the UK’s leading retailers have teamed up with PETA (People for ethical treatment of animals) to prohibit the use of fur, silk, leather, animal skin, cashmere and wool. Instead, they use man made acrylics which actually cause more damage, in the long run, to the environment.

60% of synthetic fabrics are now made in factories using machinery powered by fossil fuels, that is adding to air pollution and the overall effect of global warming. Once made, the fabrics shed micro fibres that will take hundreds of years to bio-degrade. These tiny plastic particles that are shed in the wash can end up in waterways and food supplies and are ingested by aquatic animals. Not only this, in 2018 the UK alone took 300,000 tonnes of textiles and clothing, not all of which could be recycled properly, to landfill.

Keith Kaplin, of the Fur Information Council says “petrol-based plastic fur is extremely harmful to the environment. It isn’t biodegradable and It’s harmful to wildlife”.

We aren’t saying that high fashion brands are totally blameless. They often burn stock to ensure the brands value doesn’t depreciate (2018 saw Burberry burn stock worth £28.6million) but the use of furs, silks, skin and leather lasts a life time and is highly sustainable in the long term.

As the late Karl Lagerfeld said, “I hate the idea of killing animals in a horrible way, but as long as people eat meat and wear leather I don’t get the message”.

When it came to the use of real fur, Karl had backing from a range of other high-end fashion houses and tailors. In reality, European fur lives a great life and animals aren’t kept in cages and tortured as animal rights activists have you believe. The fur trade is considered a way of managing the wildlife population and provides livelihood for many communities.

Fashion manufacturers and retailers seem to be under the influence of animal rights activists, who often use ‘sustainability’ as an excuse for being anti-fur. In the UK, this has become an increasing issue and is even backed by the Government, who has banned the production of fur in the United Kingdom. This has expanded further afield, driving the fur trade out of Europe to lands where animal rights don’t even exist, such as Russia and China.

Whilst fur isn’t for everyone, it has many benefits when it comes to longevity and sustainability. For luxury fur pieces that will never go out of style browse our Patricia K Pritchard wardrobe.

Fashion, friends and feeling good

Fashion, friends and feeling good

Here at Patricia K Pritchard, our biggest passions in life are elegant fashion, bringing people together and helping others. As a result, we created ‘Fashion, Friends and Feeling Good’ parties and events, evolving the concept of the hosted Bodyshop and Tupperware parties of old.

The idea is simple, we combine a fantastic shopping experience amongst friends with the opportunity to support charitable organisations. Once you’ve selected the charity you want to support, choose your ideal location, from a private venue to your living room or garden. Invite your friends, family and colleagues and serve the refreshments. Patricia K Pritchard will take care of the rest by providing a fantastic range of elegant, timeless fashion pieces and accessories in a range of fur, faux fur and silk. At the end of the event, we top the evening off by giving the host our ‘angels’ share’ which is 10% of our evenings profit, to go towards the supported charity.

Yes, we could focus on online shopping which guarantees we’ll reach a wider audience, but to the team at Patricia K Pritchard it’s not all about the money we make. We also want our customers to have an even better shopping experience. We want you to see, feel and try on our clothes and accessories with good friends around to help you decide. That’s what ‘Fashion, Friends and Feeling Good’ parties are about.

Sit back, relax and sip champagne in the comfort of your own home surrounded by your favourite people as we guide you through the latest season stock from the Patricia K Pritchard wardrobe.

Our favourite Spring fashion pieces from the Patricia K Pritchard wardrobe

Our favourite Spring fashion pieces from the Patricia K Pritchard wardrobe

Spring is finally here and we’ve seen the evenings get longer and the weather get (a little bit) warmer. Here at Patricia K Pritchard, we think it’s the perfect time to swap heavy furs for lighter fabrics and integrate some colour into our wardrobes. Here we explore our favourite Spring fashion pieces from the Patricia K Pritchard wardrobe.

The ‘Sasha’ outdoor parka gilet

Our first pick is the ‘Sasha’ parka style gilet which gets you ready for Spring whilst keeping you warm. It’s the perfect piece for any outdoor and countryside enthusiast to wear over a jumper or blouse. The gilet is made in a water-repellent cotton mix which keeps you protected from all types of weather, perfect for a temperamental Spring in the U.K. Genuine racoon fur trim on the hood keeps the wind off your face and a gorgeous rabbit fur lining pads the jacket and keeps you warm on chilly Spring days. If you prefer a sleeved jacket, we also have a ¾ sleeved parka jacket available as well. Just search for the ‘Gabby’.

The ‘Caroline’ reversible shawl

The ‘Caroline’ reversible shawl is a classic piece for any elegant ladies’ wardrobe. In fact, we love it so much we have a collection of fantastic colours and styles available. Each shawl is sleeved, to make it a little more practical, but you can choose your colours and we even have faux furred collars available (please note, this option is slightly dearer in price). Keep it neutral with greys, beiges and browns or be bold and beautiful in greens, reds, pinks and blues. We may be biased, but we definitely think this is a must have piece for those colder Spring and Summer evenings.

The ‘Britta’ silk scarf

Here at Patricia K Pritchard, we believe silk is a must have in any wardrobe and the ‘Britta’ scarf is one of our favourites. It’s 100% satin silk so will keep you feeling warm or cool, dependent on the weather. Available in a stunning range of colours: navy, pink or brown, it’s the perfect finishing touch for any outfit.

The ‘Conny’ Cashmere throw

The ‘Conny’ cashmere throw is a timeless piece that provides the finishing touch for any day-to-night outfit. Drape it over your shoulders at special occasions and events, or loosely tie it over your outfit to keep the chill off during the day. There is no right way to wear this throw, as it can accompany any outfit. Here at Patricia K Pritchard, we love it so much we have a fantastic range of stunning colours available for you to choose from. It really is the finishing touch to any outfit.

‘Lea’ tanned fur sliders or the ‘Trish’ three coloured fur sliders

Combine style and comfort with our range of sliders, exclusively available at Patricia K Pritchard. Keep it simple with the ‘Lea’ sliders (pictured above) with a rose gold rubber slide and a genuine tan fox fur trim. Alternatively, you can go for something a little bolder with the ‘Trish’ three coloured fur sliders. Black rubber slides topped with genuine fox fur in white, brown and pink. If you can’t decide which to purchase, why not go for both? We love both styles for Spring.

The ‘Andrea’ fur gilet

Nobody ever said you couldn’t wear fur in the Spring, and our team at Patricia K Pritchard agree the ‘Andrea’ fur gilet is a must have for this time of year. The a-symmetric hem and draped style front help to make the layering-look easy. Its thick knit design and warm rex rabbit fur will keep the chill off this Spring. We’ve kept this piece simple, and only have grey and black to choose from, but we do have a bolero style version, the ‘Joanne’ available in even more colours.

The products featured in this blog are only a selection of our favourite pieces to add to your Spring wardrobe. For most of the products there’s a fantastic range of stunning colours available for you to choose from. Simply, search the name of the product (for example ‘Britta’ for the scarf) at the top of any page to find the full range of styles and colours in that product.

HOW TO STAND OUT AT THE RACES

HOW TO STAND OUT AT THE RACES

The season for horse racing will soon be upon us, and along with the big hats and champagne comes the unbridled excitement and expectation for exquisite fashion, unique to this most prestigious event.

Wherever you’re attending, the Races are truly a time for looking and feeling your best.

There’s nothing like a spot of healthy competition, and with so many fashionistas vying for the title of Best Dressed on Ladies Day, it’s a good idea to have a few tricks up your sleeve that will make you stand out from the crowd.

We’ve compiled a list of five fabulous tips for getting noticed as Best Dressed on Ladies Day at the Races.

1 – Prepare Ahead

The first step to looking your best on Ladies Day is to make sure you give yourself enough preparation time. In the days and weeks leading up to the event, think about the sort of outfit and makeup combo you want to wear and get everything you need well in advance.

To keep your skin looking fresh and dewy, eat a healthy balanced diet and drink plenty of water, especially in the days leading up to the races. Avoid looking tired and droopy on the big day by getting plenty of sleep the night before.

2 – It’s All About Balance

With worldwide designers and milliners going into overdrive to accommodate the fashion needs of those attending the Races, it’s important to get the balance of your Ladies Day outfit just right.

A good rule of thumb is to balance intricacy with simplicity or choose an outfit that combines the two such as this gorgeous ‘Rachel’ dress. The pairing of the black lace top and the horizontal striped mid-length skirt is timelessly elegant and subtle yet eye-catching – the perfect balance.

3 – Pay Attention to Little Details

While it’s essential to have the perfect outfit for Ladies Day, the little details that complete your look as just as important.

Regarding makeup, make sure your skin looks flawless and that you choose products that match your own skin tone – better to look fresh and natural that cakey and orange!

Paint your nails and toenails and add subtle but carefully chosen accessories to give you that refinement and finish that will dazzle the judges. This beautiful silk ‘Britta’ scarf is the perfect accompanying accessory to a lady’s outfit at the Races.

4 – Be Yourself & Have Fun

There’s nothing more attractive than a lady who is truly enjoying herself and is comfortable in her own skin. The defining way to ensure you’ll get noticed on Ladies Day is by being your natural, beautiful self and simply enjoying the day.

Don’t just follow the crowd: wear a dress that makes you feel comfortable and enables you to carry yourself proudly and elegantly. The unique Michelle dress balances individual style with an effortless and comfortable design. Embrace yourself and you will naturally exude confidence and charisma at the Races, and stand good stead at getting noticed by the Best. What better way to top off a thrilling day at the races than by winning Best Dressed on Ladies Day? Whether you’re attending Newmarket, Ascot or the Curragh, we hope you’ve found these tips inspiring and instructive, and that you have a fabulous day all round.

Patricia K Pritchard: A little bit about us

Patricia K Pritchard: A little bit about us

Hi, we are Patricia and Cherie from Patricia K Pritchard. We started our fashion business just over 7 months ago with an idea: To set up an emerging British fashion brand with two big differences: besides creating and sourcing elegant occasion wear items and unique accessories we decided to create a concept where not only the customer but also the less fortunate will benefit. We created the ‘Fashion, Friends and Feeling Good’ parties (evolving the concept of the hosted Bodyshop and Tupperware parties of old) and combine this fantastic shopping experience among friends with giving a 10% share (we call it our Angels’ share) of any profits made to support charitable organizations.

So far we have raised over £6000 by gifting items to charity auctions and donating our ‘angels’ share’ helping charities such as The Marina Dalglish Appeal, Age UK, Miscarriages Association, BIRD (Brain Injury Rehabilitation & Development) and the Countess of Chester Hospital Breast Care Unit.

Coming back to our ‘Fashion, Friends and Feeling Good parties’: Customers sometimes ask us why we go to so much effort setting up events and hosted parties. Why not simply focus on online shopping which would possibly reach a wider audience with less work for us? Of course, we offer online shopping through our website www.patriciakpritchard.com but to give customers an even better shopping experience we want them to come together to look at our items and try them on in the comfort of their home with friends around to advise. That’s what ‘Fashion, Friends and Feeling Good Parties’ are about. The host chooses a charity they want to support and invites friends and we as ‘Patricia K Pritchard’ bring the fashion to them. Together we can create a fabulous afternoon or evening filled with friendship, fashion, laughter and charity.

We hope to see you soon at some of our events or online – enjoy shopping with us, Patricia & Cherie

Patricia K Pritchard proud to launch new website and help raise money for the Marina Dalglish Appeal Ball

Patricia K Pritchard proud to launch new website and help raise money for the Marina Dalglish Appeal Ball

After the successful soft launch of Patricia K Pritchard’s old-but-new-concept of ‘Fashion, Friends and Fizz”- Parties her new Online Boutique is now ready for shoppers, who are looking for a fabulous fashion experience with elegant and luxurious garments and accessories. Not only does her collection offer ready to wear items of fur, faux fur, cashmere and silk – she also focuses on bespoke and custom-made options many of her clientele seek.

Having started on a great note of raising over £300 at her Launch Party in Cheshire mid-December in aid of ‘Age UK’, she continues to share her good fortune with another Charity dear to her heart: The Marina Dalglish Breast Cancer Appeal.

Knowing how many people are affected by Cancer she donated nearly 200 items of her collections to raise money on the night of the “Marina Dalglish Appeal Ball” at Knowsley Hall on the 3rd of February 2018 and chose this date to officially launch her website.

Sponsoring a very special gift box for each table Patricia tells us: ‘Most of the Ladies and Gentlemen present at tonight’s ball will have encountered this terrible disease in one way or another – I, for example, have a very dear friend who has been re-diagnosed with cancer after being Cancer free for nearly a decade. I cannot begin to understand how she must feel having gone through all the relief and sensation of victory of having beaten Cancer only to be diagnosed with it again. Marina, Lauren and all of her amazing team are bringing a shining light into these dark days, months and years and I am very proud and honoured to be able to support their outstanding hard work in any way.”

The guests at the Ball will be encouraged to pledge generously towards the good cause of Marina Dalglish’s Charity Appeal and in return can spoil the guests at their table with the contents of the gift box Patricia K Pritchard has put together; from luxurious pairs of fur snap cuffs, cosy ugg-style earmuffs, eye-catching bag charms and key chains to gorgeous bobble Pom Pom hats Patricia K Pritchard is rewarding the guests generosity. Guests will receive 10% off their purchase when shopping on Patricia K Pritchard and 10% of their purchase value will be donated by Patricia K Pritchard additionally towards Marina’s Appeal. If you would like to shop and give at the same time – please do feel free to use ‘Marina’ as your special code when treating yourself or your beloved ones on https://www.patriciakpritchard.com.
